What is Bo-Kinako?
Bo-Kinako (棒きなこ) is a classic Japanese dagashi made from kinako — a fine powder made from roasted soybeans. If you’ve never heard of kinako before, think of it as a naturally sweet, nutty powder that’s been used in Japanese sweets for centuries.
Each pack comes with about 10 small sticks, each one coated generously in kinako powder. The base is a chewy, mochi-like candy made with kuromitsu (black sugar syrup), which pairs perfectly with the earthy sweetness of the kinako.

The packaging itself is clever too — a double-layer design with an inner tray to catch the kinako powder so it doesn’t spill everywhere. In this post, I’ll share my honest thoughts after eating it again for the first time in about 15 years.

Taste & Texture

The flavor is a gentle combination of roasted soybean sweetness and the rich, mellow taste of black sugar. The kinako itself isn’t overly sweet on its own — but paired with the kuromitsu candy, the balance is just right.

The texture is soft and chewy, somewhere between mochi and a light candy. It’s not as bouncy as proper mochi — it bites through easily and cleanly, which makes it really easy to eat one after another.
My Honest Thoughts
Bo-Kinako is one of my all-time favorite dagashi — I couldn’t wait to review this one! This particular pack has multiple small sticks, and honestly, I just kept going through them one by one without stopping.

What makes it special is how well the kinako and kuromitsu work together. The kinako alone isn’t super sweet, but the black sugar syrup brings everything together in the best way. It’s the kind of combo that just works.
Fair warning though — the kinako powder is generous. If you’re not careful, you will inhale it and choke a little 😂 And yes, you will absolutely want a drink of water nearby. But honestly? Even that’s part of the charm.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- 🫘 Perfect for kinako lovers — Rich soybean flavor done right 😄
- 🪄 Toothpick included — One per stick, so your hands stay clean
- 😮 10 sticks per pack — Way more than you’d expect, super satisfying
- 📦 Double-layer packaging — The inner tray catches loose kinako powder so it doesn’t make a mess
Cons
- So much kinako powder that you might accidentally inhale it and choke 😅
- You’ll definitely want water nearby — it’s quite dry
- Despite the double-layer design, some kinako powder still escapes into the outer bag
Who Should Try It?
Great for kids, but also perfect for anyone who loves Japanese wagashi (traditional sweets) or soybean-based flavors. Older adults will especially appreciate the gentle, not-too-sweet taste that feels very traditionally Japanese.
And since each stick comes with a toothpick, it’s also a solid option for snacking while working or doing something with your hands — no sticky fingers!
Final Thoughts

This is one I hadn’t eaten since about 15 years ago. As an adult, I’ve had plenty of other kinako products and wagashi, so I kind of drifted away from this one. But coming back to it? The taste is exactly the same, and that mild, non-cloying sweetness actually feels even more perfect now than it did as a kid.
Just make sure you have a drink ready. Seriously. You will choke on the kinako powder at least once — but trust me, it’s still worth it 😄
